Currywurst is a beloved specialty of Berlin, showcasing the city’s bold flavors and casual charm. This iconic dish—a simple grilled sausage topped with a tangy tomato curry sauce—is enjoyed at food stalls, restaurants, and bars throughout the city.

While some enjoy it with just a sprinkle of curry powder over ketchup, we’re taking it up a notch with a homemade sauce that’s bursting with flavor. It’s easy to prepare and will transport you straight to the lively streets of Berlin from the comfort of your kitchen.

Pair it with a cold beer🍺, and you’ve got yourself the perfect taste of Berlin at home!

Ingredients

For 4 people:

Sausage

500–600 g sausage of your choice

Sauce

200 g tomato ketchup
1 onion, finely chopped
1 tablespoon curry powder (mild recommended)
A little chili powder (mild)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons honey

French Fries

Potatoes, as needed
Oil, for frying
Salt, to taste

How to make it

For the Tomato Curry Sauce: 1/ Finely chop the onion. 2/ Heat the olive oil in a pot, add the chopped onion, and sauté until translucent.

3/ Stir in the curry powder and chili powder, then add the tomato paste mixed with water. Cook briefly while stirring.

4/ Add the tomato ketchup, balsamic vinegar, and honey. Simmer the sauce on low heat for 5–10 minutes.

5/ Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning by adding more curry powder or chili powder as desired.

For the French Fries: 6/ Wash the potatoes thoroughly and cut them into evenly sized pieces, leaving the skin on (peel them if preferred).
7/ Place the potato pieces in a large bowl. Add olive oil, salt, and pepper, and toss to coat evenly.

8/ Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, then arrange the potatoes in a single layer without overlapping.

9/ Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (392°F) for 30 minutes, or until golden and crispy.

For the Sausage: 10/ While the fries are baking, make shallow cuts in the sausages and pan-fry them until browned and cooked through.

11/ Once done, cut the sausages into bite-sized pieces.

To Serve: 12/ Arrange the sausages and French fries on a plate, pour the tomato curry sauce over the sausages, and serve. For an extra kick, sprinkle with more curry powder if desired. [caption id="attachment_2808" align="aligncenter" width="925"]
